South Africa’s Banyana Banyana dashed Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil as they defeated the Super Falcons 2-1 in their CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations play-off game.
Banyana Banyana were already out of WAFCON contention before the semi-finals, but gave the Super Falcons a hard fight to inch closer to a spot at the global showpiece.
South Africa had the first threat in the seventh minute when Linda Motlhalo shot from distance but the effort went over the crossbar. Nigeria responded three minutes later when Rasheedat Ajibade’s shot from outside the penalty area went wide of the target.
South Africa Crush Nigeria’s FIFA World Cup Hopes
The first half was a keenly contested affair, with both teams battling for supremacy but unable to find the decisive breakthrough before the break.
The deadlock was eventually broken in the 56th minute when South Africa launched a quick counter-attack. Thembi Kgatlana was on hand to finish off Hildah Magaia’s final pass and gave Banyana Banyana the lead with a cool finish.
Moments later, Kgatlana nearly doubled South Africa’s lead but her effort from close range was saved.
Nigeria continued to search for a response and nearly got one in the 75th minute as Kaylin Swart turned in a Woman of the Match display to stop Uchenna Kanu’s header after she rose highest to meet a cross.
South Africa struck again within a minute. Refiloe Jane struck a loose ball in the box and fired a shot thru a packed penalty area to make it 2-0.
Banyana Banyana nearly got a third straight after the restart but Magaia was unable to keep her effort down after connecting with a delightful delivery into the area.
With defeat staring them in the face Nigeria threw more men forward in search of a route back into the contest, and were rewarded deep into stoppage time. Following a VAR check, the Super Falcons were presented with a penalty after Jane had been penalized for handling the ball inside the box.
The South African midfielder was sent off for a second yellow card and Christy Ucheibe, who came on as a substitute, coolly converted from the penalty spot.

Nigeria pushed for a dramatic equalizer in the dying seconds, but South Africa held firm to secure a memorable win and keep their FIFA Women’s World Cup hopes alive.
The result sees Banyana Banyana advance to the next stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification pathway where they will continue their quest for a place at the global finals in Brazil in 2027.
