Tribute: Dotun Oladipo, a Journalist of Conviction, Integrity and Service — Rasheed Bolarinwa

The death of Dotun Oladipo has left a profound sense of loss for Rasheed Bolarinwa, who described the late journalist, media entrepreneur and advocate of ethical journalism as not only a distinguished professional but also a trusted friend, ally, confidant and brother.

In a tribute titled “The Dotun Oladipo I Knew,” Bolarinwa recalled his decades-long relationship with Oladipo, which began in the late 1990s when both were colleagues at The Punch newspapers.

According to him, Oladipo distinguished himself early in his career as a journalist of uncommon conviction, known for his calm disposition, principled approach and unwavering commitment to responsible journalism.

Bolarinwa said they shared a common understanding of the media’s role in society—to inform truthfully, act responsibly and serve the public interest.

Although their professional paths later diverged, with Bolarinwa moving into corporate communications and banking while Oladipo remained in journalism and eventually founded The EagleOnline, their friendship and shared commitment to professionalism remained strong.

Oladipo later became President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), a position that further strengthened his relationship with Bolarinwa, who served as President of the Association of Corporate Communication & Marketing Professionals in Banks (ACAMB).

Bolarinwa recalled that their organisations became partners in promoting professionalism and protecting the integrity of both the media and corporate institutions.

“Together, we navigated difficult moments, particularly when unprofessional elements sought to undermine the banking industry through misinformation, exaggeration and outright falsehoods. Dotun was often the voice of reason,” he said.

He described Oladipo as a journalist who understood the enormous power of the media and, equally, the responsibility that came with it.

According to Bolarinwa, the late GOCOP president frequently intervened behind the scenes to resolve media crises, douse tensions and promote understanding whenever disagreements threatened to escalate.

He also recalled a visit to Oladipo’s EagleOnline office in Ogba, Lagos, describing the encounter as a memorable glimpse into the personality behind the public figure.

“With characteristic pride and humility, he personally took me around the premises, sharing his vision and introducing me to members of his team. On that occasion, I also met his wife when she stopped by. It was a glimpse into the man behind the public figure—a devoted family man and an exceptionally warm host,” he said.

Bolarinwa noted that Oladipo was also deeply committed to the welfare of journalists and the growth of credible media organisations.

He said Oladipo consistently invited corporate communication professionals to GOCOP conferences and used such platforms to encourage corporate organisations to maintain relationships with credible media partners.

“He believed strongly in collaboration, mutual respect and shared growth. In return, ACAMB always welcomed opportunities to engage with GOCOP and the wider media community,” Bolarinwa stated.

He further recalled celebrating Oladipo’s 50th birthday with him and his circle of friends in Lagos six years ago, saying they remained in regular contact afterwards and often met at conferences, seminars and other industry events.

According to him, he frequently sought Oladipo’s counsel on media-related issues, particularly because of his extensive professional network and deep understanding of the journalism profession.

“Not once did he decline a request for guidance or intervention. He was generous with his time, wisdom and relationships,” he said.

Bolarinwa described Oladipo’s death as the loss of more than a former colleague, saying he had lost a trusted ally, comrade and brother.

“His departure leaves a void that will be difficult to fill,” he added.

He extended his condolences to Oladipo’s wife and children, his brother, Tunde—whom he described as his former classmate, journalism colleague and banking associate—as well as the entire GOCOP family and the Nigerian media community.

Bolarinwa said Oladipo’s life was defined by impact, friendship, service and integrity, stressing that his contributions to journalism and the media industry would remain indelible.

“His footprints are indelible, his legacy enduring, and his memory will remain a source of inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him,” he said.

He prayed that the late journalist’s soul would rest in perfect peace.
