The Presidency has dismissed as baseless and irresponsible insinuations by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a United States-based lobbying firm over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s non-attendance at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, in New York.
Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, stated this on Monday in a statement announcing that President Tinubu had extended his working vacation in Europe by a few days.
Mr Onanuga said; “Vice President Kashim Shettima, who is representing the President and leading Nigeria’s delegation to the global gathering, would present the country’s national statement and undertake other high-level engagements on behalf of Nigeria.”
Vice President Shettima arrived in New York on Monday and is expected to use Nigeria’s participation at the Assembly to advance the country’s positions on reform of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance, technology access and stronger African representation in global decision-making.
President Tinubu left Abuja on August 30 for a three-week annual leave in Europe, beginning in London.
During the vacation, the President continued to undertake official engagements. On September 18, he held talks in Paris with French businessman Vincent Bolloré on expanded investment in Nigeria’s creative and digital economy and was also received for a private dinner by French President Emmanuel Macron.
The 81st UN General Assembly General Debate begins on Tuesday, September 22, and runs until September 28 under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Nigeria is scheduled to address the Assembly on Thursday, September 24, with Vice President Shettima delivering the national statement
