Peter Obi Raises Concern Over ADC Leadership Crisis, Warns Against Undermining Democracy

By Naomi Onome

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the Federal High Court’s decision nullifying the emergence of the Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and actions taken under his leadership, warning against developments that could weaken opposition politics and undermine Nigeria’s democracy.

Obi, in a statement reacting to the ruling, described the development as shocking, unsettling and surprising, particularly with the 2027 general election approaching.

While acknowledging the authority of the judiciary to determine disputes in accordance with the law, the former Anambra State governor said the timing of the decision raised concerns about political uncertainty ahead of the next general election.

He argued that political parties and their candidates needed certainty to prepare adequately for the electoral process, warning that prolonged uncertainty could undermine effective political campaigns.

Obi alleged that the ruling party was engineering instability within opposition parties, recalling what he described as similar challenges he had faced in the Labour Party.

According to him, such developments were part of efforts to restrict civic space and weaken opposition campaigns, adding that violence against opposition members was also a cause for concern.

“One mark of democracy is that at all times, it is voters and not courts that choose leaders,” Obi said, while expressing confidence in the judiciary and reiterating his respect for the institution.

He appealed to stakeholders to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy by ensuring that the electoral process allows voters to freely and fairly choose their preferred candidates.

The former presidential candidate also warned that Nigeria must strengthen its democratic institutions and protect opposition politics, particularly amid the resurgence of military rule in parts of West Africa.

Obi maintained that opposition parties were essential to sustaining democracy and should be allowed to operate freely rather than being weakened or pushed out of electoral contests.

He further reiterated his commitment to protecting opposition parties if elected president, promising to ensure that they remain stable and vibrant and that their candidates are not persecuted out of electoral contests.

“This is a time to strengthen our democracy by allowing the opposition to thrive,” he declared.

He concluded with his familiar political slogan, insisting that “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
