The 36 state Houses of Assembly have received the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, as the National Assembly advances the constitutional amendment process.
The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, confirmed the transmission in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Ogunlana said the decision was based on the requirements of Section 9 of the Nigerian Constitution. Under the constitutional procedure, proposed amendments must secure approval from at least two-thirds of the state Houses of Assembly before the National Assembly can pass them.

The Clerk asked the state legislatures to consider the Bill according to their established legislative procedures and submit their resolutions to the National Assembly once their deliberations are concluded.
He explained that there is no specific constitutional deadline requiring state assemblies to communicate their decisions within a particular number of days.
Nevertheless, the National Assembly expects the state legislatures to respond within 30 days of receiving the amendment Bill.
Ogunlana emphasised that the 30-day period is administrative in nature and does not constitute a deadline imposed by the Constitution.
The National Assembly said it respects the independence of the state Houses of Assembly and recognises the constitutional role they are required to play in the amendment process.
It said the transmission was designed to provide the state legislatures with an opportunity to carry out their responsibilities in an orderly and transparent manner.
Following the conclusion of deliberations, the resolutions of the 36 state assemblies will be returned to the National Assembly.
The lawmakers said subsequent action would be taken in accordance with the constitutional requirements governing amendments.
They also pledged continued adherence to due process, institutional cooperation and the respective legislative responsibilities of the federal and state governments.
