The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) says reliable and comprehensive data remains critical to addressing the evolving drug situation across West Africa.

The Head of the Prevention and Drug Control Division at the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Daniel Amankwaah, stated this at the closing ceremony of a capacity-building workshop for the Nigerian Epidemiological Network on Drug Use (NENDU) in Lagos State.

According to him, only reliable, updated and comprehensive data can support effective policies and interventions aimed at tackling drug-related challenges across the region.

Amankwaah urged NENDU focal points to apply the knowledge gained from the workshop, particularly in the areas of data collection, validation and analysis, to strengthen Nigeria’s contribution to regional drug monitoring efforts.
“We expect to see a clear improvement in the quality and timeliness of the data Nigeria submits to WENDU. ECOWAS remains committed to supporting Nigeria and all Member States in strengthening their drug data systems.

This is a step-by-step process that we will continue until all data sources are covered,” Dr. Amankwaah said.

The ECOWAS official also advocated practical measures to improve data collection, including the provision of data-gathering equipment for NENDU centres and the expansion of the network to cover at least 16 neuropsychiatric hospitals, bringing the total number of centres to a minimum of 20.

Also speaking, the Director of the Narcotics and Drug Abuse Division at Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Mrs Henrietta Bakura-Onyeneke, said quality data forms the foundation of an effective national response to drug use and its associated harms.

“Let us leave this workshop with a renewed commitment to producing better data and stronger evidence, in order to drive more effective actions for the health and well-being of Nigerians,” she said.

In her remarks, the Director in the Department of Hospital Services at the ministry, Dr Amina Kazaure, encouraged participants to collect relevant data, verify its quality, submit accurate and timely reports, and utilise the information to support evidence-based decision-making.

“Let us continue to work together: treatment centres, the Federal Ministry of Health, ECOWAS, and other stakeholders.

“I am confident that this workshop has enhanced our knowledge and, most importantly, our commitment to improving drug use practices in Nigeria,” Kazaure stated.

She commended the ECOWAS Commission for its continued partnership and support in strengthening drug data systems across the region.

The three-day workshop brought together NENDU focal points, officials of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and other stakeholders responsible for drug data collection from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

The workshop aimed to strengthen participants’ technical capacity to produce high-quality drug use reports that support evidence-based policymaking and drug prevention and control interventions across ECOWAS member states.

NENDU is responsible for improving data collection, analysis and reporting on drug use trends in Nigeria and forms part of the West African Epidemiology Network on Drug Use (WENDU), established by the ECOWAS Commission in 2013.

The network serves as a regional platform for collecting, analysing and disseminating data on drug use and related issues across ECOWAS member states.
