The Director-General of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Comrade Issa Aremu, has hailed the successful conclusion of the Osun State off-cycle governorship election as further evidence that Nigeria remains a leading democracy destination in Africa.

He said the recently concluded Osun governorship election demonstrated the growing maturity of Nigeria’s democracy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The DG commended the statesmanship of President Tinubu for providing a level playing field for a competitive multi-party state election, which, he said, produced an acceptable outcome that made all participants winners.

“While many countries are lamenting and agonising over how democracies die, Nigerians must celebrate how democracy thrives, as witnessed in quick succession in Ekiti, Ondo and Osun, with improved elections conducted by INEC that have energised mass voter participation,” he said.

Aremu spoke on the sidelines of a homecoming ceremony organised by the University of Ilorin in honour of Emeritus Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the immediate past Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), held on Monday, 17 August 2026.

The MINILS Director-General said it was time to acknowledge and celebrate Nigeria’s and Africa’s success stories, which, he said, must include “strong men and women of accomplishment” such as Professor Oloyede, who had contributed to building strong institutions, including JAMB.

He commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole, for organising the “timely and historically significant” event in honour of Oloyede, who served two terms as JAMB Registrar.

Aremu described the former JAMB Registrar as a benefactor of the premier labour institute, saying he contributed to the diversification of its academic programmes from weekly courses to diploma and bachelor’s degree programmes through its affiliation with the University of Ilorin.

He said the programmes had produced hundreds of graduates since 2019.

Aremu, who is an alumnus of the National Institute for Labour Studies, Kuru, Jos, said Nigerians should move away from narratives of despair and give greater attention to stories of progress and hope.
