The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced Saturday, 19 September 2026, as the date for the bye-election in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, following the death of the constituency’s representative in the House of Representatives.
In its timetable for the election, INEC said the Notice of Election would be published on Thursday, 20 August, in accordance with Section 76(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act.
According to the timetable, “political parties are to conduct their primaries between 21 and 25 August, while the final list of nominated candidates will be published on 8 September.”
Campaigns are scheduled to commence on 9 September and end on 17 September, two days before the election.
The Commission urged all political parties to adhere strictly to the timetable and conduct their activities in accordance with the law.
It also reassured stakeholders across the constituency’s 903 Polling Units, 31 Registration Areas and three Local Government Areas of its commitment to providing a level playing field for all political parties and candidates.
INEC pledged to conduct a free, fair and inclusive election, while urging eligible voters to turn out in large numbers and exercise their civic responsibility peacefully and responsibly.
