The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day message, arguing that the administration’s account of economic progress differs from the experience of many Nigerians.

The faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, made the position known in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Tinubu’s address highlighted the economic reforms introduced by his administration and argued that Nigeria had moved beyond the most difficult phase of its adjustment. He said the country had “passed through our own Red Sea” and urged citizens not to look back.

The Turaki-led PDP turned the biblical analogy against the administration, arguing that Nigerians were still experiencing significant economic hardship.

The faction accused Tinubu and the APC of presiding over what it described as a difficult economic period, while questioning the government’s portrayal of itself as leading Nigerians towards prosperity.

According to the opposition group, rising household expenses remained a major concern. It specifically mentioned food, rent, transportation and education.

The faction cited the latest NBS figures, which showed food inflation at 19.57 per cent in August 2026. Although the rate declined from 20.31 per cent in July, the data showed that food prices were still considerably higher than a year earlier.

The opposition group said the figures should be understood in the context of household budgets, particularly among families that spend a large share of their income on food.

It also criticised interest rates and the cost of borrowing, arguing that businesses faced difficulties financing expansion and creating additional employment.

The faction further accused the APC administration of failing to adequately address insecurity and political divisions.

Meanwhile, the President has argued that his administration’s policies are beginning to produce economic improvements. In his Independence Day address, Tinubu cited economic growth, lower inflation, stronger foreign reserves and increased non-oil exports as evidence of progress.

The contrasting positions reflect the broader political debate over how Nigeria’s economic performance should be assessed ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Turaki-led PDP said Nigerians would ultimately determine their preferred political direction at the polls and urged citizens to judge leaders based on their experiences and the results of government policies.
