Former Music Pastor Caleb Flynn to Die in Prison for Wife’s Murder
Caleb Flynn, a former music pastor who once appeared on American Idol, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole after being found guilty of murdering his wife.
Flynn, 40, was convicted last week following a jury deliberation that rejected his claim that an intruder had broken into his Ohio home and shot Ashley Flynn while she slept.
He was also convicted of eight additional charges, including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence.
Ashley, 37, worked as a teacher and was the mother of Flynn’s two daughters. She was shot dead in February while the children, then aged nine and 11, were sleeping in the home.
Flynn initially told investigators that he had been asleep when he heard gunshots. He claimed he found Ashley dead in bed and discovered that the garage door was open.
Prosecutors said the apparent break-in had been staged.
Evidence presented during the trial included police body-camera footage and information obtained from Flynn’s iPhone and Apple Watch. Prosecutors used the data to challenge his version of events.
The prosecution also presented testimony from Botner, whom Flynn met when she was an intern at his church.
Botner read some of the messages exchanged between them, reportedly part of a collection of approximately 100,000 texts.
One message allegedly showed Flynn saying he had been awake until 4am thinking about ways to kill Ashley without being caught and sent to prison.

Another message allegedly stated, “I just want her dead and gone.”
The former music pastor did not testify at trial, and his defence team did not present any witnesses.
During sentencing, letters from his daughters were read aloud.
One daughter questioned how Flynn could have killed her mother, writing, “Dear Daddy, I don’t even know where to start. How could you do such a thing?”
She called Ashley “the perfect person” and said her mother was the only mother she had ever known.
The other daughter began her letter with “Dear Caleb”, refusing to refer to him as her father.
She asked him to confess and accept the consequences of his actions.
“You made me feel like an idiot thinking I could trust you,” she wrote, adding that she would never visit him in prison.
Flynn sobbed as the letters were delivered.
He later addressed the court, saying he loved his family and apologising for unspecified decisions. He acknowledged that he had failed his wedding vows but continued to deny killing Ashley.
Judge Jeannine Pratt described him as an “extreme” risk to the public and sentenced him to life without parole.
Flynn’s attorney, Patrick Mulligan, has indicated that he will appeal. The lawyer argued that there was a lack of evidence establishing prior calculation and design.
He also challenged the prosecution’s use of infidelity evidence and questioned the tampering charge because Flynn’s gun was never found.
Ashley’s family said she was a devoted Christian who loved people and valued motherhood.
Flynn’s brief American Idol appearance came in 2013, when he publicly declared his love for Ashley.
