Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, has confirmed the death of one of its senior lecturers, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, following an incident at a hotel in the town.
Uwuigbe reportedly died on Sunday, October 5, 2026, at a hotel located in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to the police, the lecturer had checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
Jacob was described by the police as a commercial sex worker. Investigators said Uwuigbe allegedly engaged her services before later asking her to leave the room to purchase water.
When she returned, she reportedly discovered the lecturer lying dead on the bed.
The incident was subsequently reported to the Edo State Police Command at about 8pm.
Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem said three persons had been arrested in connection with the case.
Those currently in police custody are reportedly the owner of the hotel, its manager and Jacob.

Ikoedem said the command was informed that Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and later died after sending Jacob to purchase water.
The spokesperson said detectives were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
She also disclosed that the lecturer’s body had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
While confirming Uwuigbe’s status as a staff member, the university distanced the institution from the circumstances surrounding his death.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the incident happened outside the school environment and involved the lecturer in his private capacity.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life,” Aladenika said.
He further clarified that the woman allegedly involved in the incident was not a student of Ambrose Alli University.
The police have yet to announce the precise cause of death, while investigations continue to determine what happened inside the hotel room and whether any offence was committed.
