The continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai presents a complicated political calculation for the All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While his absence from active political engagement could deprive the opposition of an experienced strategist, political observers warn that prolonged detention could equally create public sympathy and provide opposition parties with a powerful campaign narrative.
El-Rufai has been detained since February 2026 following corruption-related investigations and court proceedings. The former governor was arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, in March over money-laundering charges and pleaded not guilty.
The case has attracted particular attention because El-Rufai remains an important figure in Northern politics and has aligned himself with the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
The development has prompted questions over whether the case will ultimately strengthen the APC or create political difficulties for the ruling party.
Political scientist Dr Kabiru Said Sufi believes the APC may currently be enjoying an organisational advantage from El-Rufai’s absence.
Sufi said the political effect of the case depends heavily on how Nigerians understand the allegations and the legal proceedings.
“People seem to be seeing it either as an elitist fight, the latest fight of the elites, or as a fight between the political class,” he said.
He added that public interest in the case appeared to have fallen and that opposition parties had not maintained strong pressure over the matter.
“Surprisingly, even the opposition itself has been somehow quiet,” Sufi said.
According to him, the APC has benefited from the fact that the matter has largely shifted from political confrontation to the judicial arena.
“I think the APC government has smartly moved the issue to the judiciary, passed on the issue to the judiciary, and there is less anger over the issue,” he said.
“For now, the way it will help the APC is that one of the strategists of the opposition has been taken out of the equation.”
However, Sufi warned that the political advantage could disappear if public anger becomes stronger.
“If the kind of interest and anger we have felt at the beginning had been sustained, then it would have worked against the APC government,” he said.
Political commentator Comrade Aminu Rabiu Kano said the importance of El-Rufai to Northern and national politics should not be underestimated.

“El-Rufai is not an ordinary politician. He is a former governor, a prominent northern political figure and one of the politicians who played a significant role in the emergence of the APC,” Kano said.
He acknowledged that the Federal Government could insist that the case is about accountability and the rule of law.
Nevertheless, he stressed that political perception could determine how voters eventually react.
“Whether that argument is correct or not is a separate question, but politically, perception matters,” he said.
Kano argued that detention could restrict El-Rufai’s physical involvement in politics but could not necessarily remove his influence among supporters.
“Detaining a politician can restrict his physical participation in politics, but it does not necessarily eliminate his political influence,” he said.
He also urged politicians and observers to avoid treating Northern Nigeria as a politically uniform region.
According to him, voters are influenced by a combination of factors, including insecurity, economic conditions, government performance, candidates, alliances and local political structures.
“If people predominantly see it as a genuine legal process, its electoral impact may be limited,” Kano said.
But he added, “If, however, a significant section of the electorate comes to perceive it as political persecution, then it could become a useful mobilising issue for the opposition.”
Comrade Umar Muhammad Kofar Naisa, Country Director of SEDSAC, took the position that the APC could suffer politically if sympathy for El-Rufai continues to grow.
“Continued detention of El-Rufai could hurt the APC, especially because he has many supporters as a former governor. It could generate sympathy among the people, and that sympathy may turn into votes on election day,” he said.
Kofar Naisa also argued that the former governor’s past political relationship with the current administration should be considered.
“Anyone who knows the history of the Tinubu administration knows that El-Rufai played a role in bringing it to power. His arrest has further damaged the government’s image because people see it as going after opposition figures,” he said.
He further warned that the case could have an effect within the APC, with some members potentially becoming less willing to criticise the government.
“Continued detention could reduce the courage of some APC members because they may feel that whatever contribution they make could eventually lead them to the same situation El-Rufai has found himself in if they disagree with the Federal Government,” he said.
Meanwhile, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II has questioned the consistency of the country’s anti-corruption campaign.
Speaking to Channels Television in Lagos, Sanusi referred to El-Rufai’s detention while stressing that Nigeria has institutions and courts responsible for corruption cases.
“An example is my brother Nasir El-Rufai who’s been denied bail. He’s been in detention for seven months, not having been convicted for anything,” he said.
The debate surrounding the case is therefore unlikely to disappear as the 2027 elections approach. Whether it becomes an advantage for the APC or a mobilisation tool for the opposition will depend largely on public perception and the eventual outcome of the legal proceedings.
