The National Orientation Agency in Kebbi State has urged citizens to remain patient and supportive of the Federal Government’s economic reforms despite the hardship associated with changing petrol prices.
The agency’s state Director, Muhammed Nasir Karofi, made the call in a statement released to journalists in Birnin Kebbi.
According to Karofi, the latest changes in the retail price of petrol should be understood within the context of the deregulated downstream petroleum market.
He said international crude oil prices, global supply conditions, foreign exchange movements and market replacement costs all play significant roles in determining the price consumers pay at filling stations.
“Under the full deregulation framework of the petroleum downstream sector, local prices shift in tandem with global supply dynamics, market replacement costs, and foreign exchange factors,” Karofi stated.
He pointed out that the economic situation was not peculiar to Nigeria, saying other West African countries, including Benin Republic, Niger, Togo and Cameroon, were also dealing with fuel price adjustments and inflationary pressures.
The Kebbi NOA director admitted that the impact of higher petrol prices was being felt by households and businesses. However, he maintained that the reforms were aimed at addressing deeper economic problems and improving government finances.
Karofi said the removal of fuel subsidies would help eliminate what he described as an unsustainable financial burden on government while creating greater opportunities for spending on essential public services.

He said Kebbi State was taking steps to protect residents from the worst effects of the current economic difficulties.
Among the measures, he listed expanded mass transit initiatives and improvements to transport infrastructure, including the Birnin Kebbi Central Motor Park.
The state government, he said, was also investing in healthcare through the Harmonised Health Sector Operational Plan, with attention to the rehabilitation of community health facilities, medical outreach programmes and expansion of the state contributory healthcare scheme.
Karofi added that the government continued to provide operational and logistical support to security agencies to ensure the safety of residents and protect agricultural communities.
He said additional welfare, agricultural and empowerment programmes were being implemented for vulnerable people, women and young Nigerians across the state’s 21 local government areas.
He also noted that the Federal Government was pursuing measures aimed at strengthening the economy, including student financing, national security improvements and economic diversification.
Karofi urged Nigerians to remain peaceful and patient, stressing that economic transformation could not be achieved overnight.
He called on traditional and community leaders, civil society organisations, youth groups and other stakeholders to encourage citizens to support the reforms while government efforts to cushion their effects continue.
