ASUU-AAU Begins Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Allowances, Unimplemented 2025 Deal

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike over the alleged non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria-ASUU agreement by the Edo State Government.

The union was said to have made this known in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Cyril Oziegbe Onogbosele, and Secretary, Dr. William Odion, made available to newsmen in Benin City.

The union said in a statement dated Monday, August 24, 2026 that the strike would begin today, Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

The decision was taken at the union’s congress held on Monday after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum previously given to the S state government and the management of the university, the statement said.
“The Congress deliberated on the update on the ultimatum following several failed attempts by the branch to get the university authorities and the Edo State Government to implement the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement.

“The briefing indicated that there was no formal response from the university authorities and Edo State Government over the 14-day ultimatum on the implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement in the university.

“Specifically, Congress was told that the Agreement was yet to be implemented and that there was no formal commitment from the university authorities and Edo State Government on the implementation of the Agreement in the university,” the statement said.

It added that after exhaustive deliberations, the Congress decried the failure of the university authorities and Edo State Government to meet up with the union’s demands.

The demands listed in the statement include implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement and payment of accrued arrears of allowances from January 2026 to date.

From 12.01am members would cease to deliver any statutory services and continue to do so indefinitely.

The statement said the industrial action covers the conduct and invigilation of all forms of examinations including undergraduate, postgraduate, oral, CBE and paper-based examinations as well as statutory meetings.

Others are departmental, faculty, senate and committee meetings, students’ research project supervision and Industrial Training (IT)/Teaching Practice supervision.

“Congress directed the Executive Committee (EXCO) of the branch to engage the press/media through press conferences, releases, etc., over the non-implementation of the Agreement in the university.

“Finally, Congress further mandated the EXCO to activate the Strike Monitoring Team and implored members to strictly adhere to the resolutions of the Strike Monitoring Team,” the statement said.
